Surplus Food Distribution Program begins serving 60,000 households every three months. ~ Home Equity Program begins.

Head Start receives state supplemental funding. ~ Department of Day Care Services established to expand neighborhood and Head Start-based day care programs.

1988
Proposal submitted to state Board of Regents to establish higher degree granting institution at ABCD – the Urban College of Boston. Jessie B. Cox Charitable Foundation provides three-year start-up grant of $250,000 for Urban College. ~ ABCD Housing Services opens “housing search” program to aid welfare families who are homeless and living in hotels.

Housing Services Program established. ~ Foster Grandparents Program receives state supplemental funding.

     
     
     
  1987
   

Massachusetts Immigration and Refugee Assistance (MIRA) coalition established and based at ABCD to assure that immigrants rights are protected. ~ Urban College Program holds symposium on access to higher education for low-income learners. ~ Ford Foundation and Public Private Ventures, Philadelphia, give ABCD special award for its Summer Training and Education Program (STEP) to combat high school dropout problem.

ABCD Head Start opens special Parent Child Center for infants and toddlers who are HIV positive. ~ Day Care Department opens South Cove Teen Parent Program for infants and toddlers and their teenage parents. ~ ABCD is lead agency in new Boston Initiative for Teen Pregnancy Prevention.
