Charles Yancey - Mattapan

For dutifully serving and giving back to the city that nurtured his sense of public service, the Mattapan FSC honors Charles C. Yancey.

For 24 years, Charles Yancey has been a member of the Boston City Council, tirelessly advocating on behalf of his community.  Currently serving his twelfth term in office, he chairs the Post Audit & Oversight committee and vice chairs the Human Services, Labor & Workforce Development, and Aviation & Transportation committees.

Throughout his tenure in office, Councilor Yancey has placed a high priority on Boston’s youth.  As a product of Boston Public Schools, he challenges the system to improve – laboring to stem the violence that plagues the city’s streets and reverse the staggering drop-out rate of Boston’s teenagers.

In addition to his work with the city’s youth, Councilor Yancey was instrumental in securing a $250,000 grant from the Boston Redevelopment Authority. He also helped facilitate the construction of a new public library, a police station and a community center.  Councilor Yancey has provided over 100,000 books for children through his annual book fair and received the American Cancer Society Special Citation for his efforts to curb smoking in Boston.

“Councilor Yancey’s work and character embody the very mission of ABCD, working to improve the quality of life for those in his community,” said Mattapan FSC Director Lillie Searcy.

Councilor Yancey received a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Tufts University, a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University, and an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Mount Ida College in 2001.

He and his wife Marzetta have three children and two grandchildren.
