Josephine Worrell - Elder Services

If you want to know how to stay young, talk to Josephine Worrell.  At age 95, Josephine has spent the past two decades in faithful service as a Foster Grandparent. ABCD’s Elder Services program applauds her for her efforts.

For more than 23 years, Josephine worked as a Nurse Assistant at Brigham & Women’s Hospital tending to the needs of sick infants. Since 1982, Josephine has spent her days at Children’s Hospital attending to the needs of sick infants in her role as a Foster Grandparent. Watching Josephine care for ailing children, it is easy to believe that her presence is all they need to feel better.  Her natural empathy has made her an invaluable asset to the hospital.

“All of us who work with the Foster Grandparent Program wish we had more Josephines,” said Elder Services Director Ruth Blackman.  “She is one of our most dedicated grandmas; she is adored by all who come in contact with her.  Her positive outlook on life makes us all feel younger!”

In addition to her service at Children’s Hospital, Josephine has volunteered with the AARP, the Urban League and Mass Senior Action. She also teaches Sunday School and sings in the choir at People’s Baptist Church.  For her contributions, Josephine has been the recipient of awards and citations from several institutions, including Children’s Hospital, Boston City Council and Suffolk Superior Court.

Says Josephine of her service, “I have met parents and children from all over the world and I have had one grand time.  The children make my day, every day.  My life, my service, has been a pleasure.”
