Maria Cruz has been a part of the ABCD family since 1981 when she joined the Jamaica Plain APAC. From fuel to food stamps, she’s done it all in her three decades of service. But now, most of her efforts are focused on the food pantry.
Maria works there three days a week. It is seeing more business lately so a steady hand is crucial. She ensures that the pantry is stocked with plenty of fresh, healthy food.
“She’s very proactive,” says JP APAC Operations Manager Ana Soto de Bechtold. “Maria’s not waiting until the rain comes; she’s always taking her umbrella.”
Maria was born in Ecuador. She moved to New York City in 1968 and met her husband that same day. She and Jose have been married for 39 years.
“Maria goes to community events and promotes the APAC without being asked,” said ABCD President/CEO Bob Coard. “She’s made a huge contribution to ABCD. We’re proud to have her as part of the ABCD family.”
Maria says she feels good about her work, and relates the story of a man who came in to the pantry for the first time. After he filled out the form and she gave him his food, his eyes got really wide, as if to say, “I get the food now? I don’t have to wait?” He hugged her, telling her he hadn’t eaten in three days.
“That’s why I do this,” she says. “I feel proud to help my community; everybody is equal in my eyes.”
Maria Cruz loves what she does, has no plans to stop, and we’re all better off because of it.
