LearningWorks

LearningWorks is ABCD's workforce development center. Located in downtown Boston, it offers a variety of education, training and support services for low-income adults.

The center is also a resource for employers seeking qualified staff or training opportunities. LearningWorks facilities include a computer lab and a self-directed resource room with automated job banks and resume writing programs.

Skills Training Programs

  • First Steps into Child Care Careers prepares eligible adults for employment in the growing field of child care services. Enrollees complete two college-credit courses in Child Growth and Development and College Writing, study children's literature, learn pediatric CPR and first aid, all culminating in a 14-week supervised internship at an ABCD Head Start or Early Head Start site. Graduates receive job placement and post-placement services to help them move on to advanced training and degrees.
  • GATE (Gaining Access to Training and Education) is a job skills enhancement and computer literacy program offered to food stamp recipients. Four different week-long programs cover resumes and applications, interview techniques, internet job search and basic computer skills.
  • JobNet provides career assessment and counseling, job readiness activities and job search and placement services. A multilingual staff works with automated job banks to create career opportunities for job seekers on all rungs of the career ladder.
  • Downtown Adult Literacy Program tutors adults one-on-one on basic computer and reading skills, as well as GED preparation. Students also learn basic computer skills, enjoy field trips and guest lectures, and take part in Boston's annual Adult Education and Literacy Week.
  • College Pathways offers information on how to get into college. The program includes college writing and math classes, but also focuses on college applications and financial aid applications, and really works to help interested individuals wade through all that paperwork.
  • Young Parents Program serves 16-to-21-year-old parents and expectant parents. The program provides individual counseling and support, GED preparation, parenting skills classes, job and career development counseling and support groups.
