Since 1964, ABCD has operated the citywide Head Start program in Boston, providing crucial early childhood development to low-income families. Parents are active participants in Head Start, approving staff and budgets, and reviewing policies and development plans.

Early Head Start serves pregnant women, infants and toddlers, providing very young children with care and stimulation proven to aid brain development in the earliest years.

ABCD's Head Start programs serve more than 2,400 pre-kindergarten children throughout Boston. These sites offer a number of programs that include, but are not limited to:

  • The PEECE project provides education opportunities for preschool teachers at every level through a seventier professional development program
  • The Family Connection project supports parents suffering from depression
  • Head Start for Homeless Children offers comprehensives services and case management to homeless children and their families
  • As part of the Boston Children's Museum Collaboration, Head Start families receive free passes to the museum. In addition, teachers participate in professional development activities that integrate art and science into the classroom
  • The Good Guys program supports fathers who want more active participation in their children's lives
  • The Vision in PreSchoolers study is integrated into the program's regular vision screening for all Head Start children, determining if certain vision tests can predict those children who would benefit for more comprehensive vision examinations
  • The Living Well Task Force, developed out of a concern for childhood obesity, promotes health eating and physical activity and helps family and staff to develop healthy lifestyle habits
