Keeping Seniors Healthy and Active

The Stay Strong Initiative offers a menu of healthy aging programs delivered at ABCD neighborhood service centers, senior centers and community centers throughout the neighborhoods of Boston.

Program offerings include:

  • My Life My Health: Chronic Disease Self Management - a six week 2.5 hour weekly program for those who deal with chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes or high blood pressure. Caregivers are encouraged to participate. Weekly action plans are used to motivate participants to take important steps toward self management. Topics include techniques to reduce stress, improve diet and fitness, better breathing, pain and fatigue management and better communication.
  • Healthy Eating for Successful Living - a six week 2 hour weekly course that includes a participant workbook on proper nutrition and the USDA My Plate recommendations.   Participants increase their understanding of balanced meals from each food group, reading food labels and healthy cooking techniques. Goal setting is encouraged at each session.
  • Food Dollars - a six week 1.5 hour weekly program aimed at increasing access to healthy food through improved knowledge of community food resources and healthy eating knowledge. Topics include the senior food pyramid, reading the unit price, grocery store cost saving techniques, local benefits and resources and food safety. Class may include grocery store and/or farmers’ market tours.
  • Exercise Classes - including dance, general fitness, and chair yoga. Classes are 45 minutes in duration.
