A Healthy Return to the Community

The Women's Re-Entry and Prevention Program (WRPP) is a program for women transitioning back into the Boston community from correctional facilities. The program is unique for its gender responsive model that addresses the gaps in the service network for female inmates from Boston, primarily women of color, who are incarcerated and newly released.

The program provides a bridge back into society for women. WRPP provides integrated pre- and post- release services with a special focus on women at risk for HIV and offers a unique opportunity for women to receive support prior to release on their personal goals and to create action plans for creating the life they want back home. WRPP encourages empowerment and supports participants to identify and prioritize their goals and needs and to make specific plans for a healthy and successful transition.

In the three months before their release, the women participate in support groups based on the Project START model, an evidence-based multi-session intervention that works individually with participants prior to release and continues in the community after their release. Upon release the program also offers service linkages and discharge planning, and case management services that help connect women to stabilization services in housing, health care, substance abuse treatment, employment, and education.

The primary goals of WRPP are to support healthy lifestyle choices, reduce risks for HIV, STIs, and Hepatitis, and assist with accessing HIV services, while addressing other issues the women often face during their transition from a correctional setting to the community.
